Let’s deal with our mutual friend, Bianchi. Ken’s not stupid. Ken is the slickest criminal I’ve ever met in all of my years, and I’ve met a few criminals. But, without doubt, Ken is the master of them all. He is very circumspect … that’s where his brilliance lies, in his ability to premeditate things, and to protect himself. He is very good at that.

WHILE held in custody at the Los Angeles County Jail during Buono’s trial, Ken almost engineered his freedom when a young actress and budding screenplay writer fell in love with him. ‘VerLyn’ was a statuesque beauty with sultry, raven hair. She had a figure that made most men – and many women – drool and, as one woman observed, ‘VerLyn has a figure that most women would die for.’ Indeed, even after serving 15 years in prison – she has since been released – Veronica is still an extremely beautiful woman.

Veronica was, and still is, highly intelligent, too, but it would be fair to add that she has never fully applied her many abilities to any studies or goals and, around the time of the Hillside Stranglings, she was deeply hooked into a downward spiral of cocaine and sexual perversion, the latter of which would become her downfall.

In the waning days of 1979–80, Veronica was into sadomasochism, practising as a dominatrix. She was partying every night, heavily dependent on the cocaine high that fuelled her fantasies and fed her enormous bisexual appetite for whipping the flesh of LA’s movers and shakers.

When I met Veronica at the Western Washington Correctional Center for Women (WWCCW) in Gig Harbor, she explained, ‘In those days, I was inexorably slipping deeper and deeper into the nether world of the leather and the lash scene. The more lurid, the more wickedly cruel the fantasy, the better.’

She also explained that she had had aspirations of becoming an actress and a screenplay writer. In fact, she had penned a number of frantic, blood-dripping fiction pieces, which were far too extreme for any mainstream publisher to commission. One of those stories was called The Mutilated Cutter, concerning a female serial killer who injected semen into her victim’s vaginas to make police think that a man was the murderer.

The Los Angeles trial of Bianchi and Buono was in full swing at this time, so Veronica wrote to the handsome Ken, asking him to help her research The Mutilated Cutter. Within a short space of time, they were meeting frequently in the county jail, and Veronica fell in love with Bianchi, who had now convinced her that he was an innocent man.

Week after week, they shared fantasies and intimate love letters and, quick to take any advantage that came his way, with the plot of The Mutilated Cutter appealing to him, Ken persuaded VerLyn to carry out her literary plot in real life – in Bellingham, of all places. This, he said, would prove that the Hillside Strangler was still at large.
